This Japanese Toaster Oven Makes the Crispiest Bagels I’ve Ever Had

I’ve been stockpiling home and kitchen appliances like it’s my job since moving into my first solo apartment. My home’s aesthetic is very important to me, and finding both functional and cute gadgets isn’t always easy. A toaster was a must-have item. I had put off buying one during the first few months of my move, but once I was settled in, I realized how much I missed my morning avocado toast and weekend bagels. After seeing it all over my FYP, that’s when I discovered  the Balmuda toaster—an innovative toaster oven that uses steam to heat up food to crispy perfection.

Since moving into my first solo apartment, I’ve been stockpiling home and kitchen appliances like it’s my job. My home’s aesthetic is very important to me, and it’s not always easy to find both functional and cute gadgets. A toaster was an absolute necessity. I had put off purchasing one for the first few months of my relocation, but once I was settled in, I realized how much I missed my morning avocado toast and weekend bagels. I discovered the Balmuda toaster after seeing it all over my FYP—an innovative toaster oven that uses steam to heat up food to crispy perfection.

The toaster oven crisps bread on the outside while preserving the aroma and texture on the inside by using moisture and high heat. It costs around $329 and is available in four different colors (taupe, white, black, and gray). It measures about 14.1 inches wide, 8.2 inches tall, and weighs slightly more than 10 pounds—not exactly compact if you’re short on kitchen counter space, but you can always store it in a nearby cupboard. The temperature settings range from 350 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, and the timer can be set to up to 15 minutes.

Unlike a standard toaster or toaster oven, the Balmuda Toaster also includes a teeny tiny measuring cup that holds exactly five milliliters of water (pro tip: use filtered water), which you pour into a small slot before turning on the timer. Why, you might ask, add water? The toaster oven’s purpose is to create a “bread sauna” that locks in moisture, resulting in a golden crispy layer and perfect crunch with every bite. According to the brand’s science, bread begins to “fluff” at 140 degrees Fahrenheit, then begins to get that gorgeous golden color at 320 degrees, and browns at around 428 degrees.
